Alexander Calder
Famous Artist, Alexander Calder ~ Born 1898 Lawnton, PA., Died New York 1976  
Born into a family of artists. From an early age he showed an interest in engineering and gained a degree from the 'Stevens Insitute of Technology', Hoboken. Calder also attended the Art Students League, New York from (1923 - 1926). Made his first sculpture in (1925). His first exhibition of paintings took place in (1926)at the Artists Gallery New York.             
Calder then divided his time between France and the United States and in 1929 the 'Galerie Billiet', gave him his first solo show, he had become a very close friend of 'Joan Miro' during 1928 and it was Miro who encouraged him to spend much time in France where he is almost as renowned as he is in America. In the very early 1930s Calder began to experiment with abstract sculpture introducing moving parts into his works. The artwork you can see today shows a reflection of the painter, and sculpture, and the engineer that is 'Alexander Calder'.
