RAOUL DUFY ART

Famous Artist, Raoul Dufy ~ Born at Le Havre 1877, French painter in oils and watercolours.  Dufy was awarded a scholarship in 1900 to the Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.  He loved the impressionists, and from 1905 studied the Fauve style of <atisse and began to work in richer colours.  His first one-man exhibition at the Galerie Berthe Weill in Paris 1906. Worked with renowned artists, Marquet and Braque, after which he set up a small factory 1911 to design and print fabrics for the couturier Poiret.  From 1920 spent a lot of time in Vence, Nice, painted regattas, converts, landscapes and reace courses in brilliant colours and with calligraphic brushwork.  Decorated ceramics by Artigas from 1923-30, illustrated various books with woodcuts, lithographs and etchings and painted a huge mural of 'Electricity' for the 1937 Paris International Exhibition.  Awarded the main paintin prize at the 1952 Venice Biennale.  died at Forcalquier in the Basses-Alpes in 1953.
